I think a better definition for "stock" is a manufacturer/carrier-blessed ROMs for a particular device, including upgrades. I prefer to define it this way because some people may not realize that they have an upgraded ROM due to automatic OTA upgrades. And "vanilla" are ROM which attempts to be as close as possible to original AOSP ROMs (e.g. by removing ...

Good point, I could see the point with an "External GPS" tag, but I think at this point we can safely assume that any question about GPS refers to the internal GPS unless otherwise specified. Have had a look through the only three questions that were tagged "internal gps" and couldn't see anything on them that required the distinction. Have removed the "...

I like the suggestion. And it's even better if we have a volunteer. :) If there are no objections and counter arguments, then the separation should get done.

That was me yesterday. There were only two questions so I didn't think the distinction was important. (Side note, I renamed it from haptic to haptic-feedback.) I have no problem with them being separate though. I unsynonymized and retagged the two questions, and added it to a third that needed it.

Agreed, it is now burninated.

Sounds good to me, especially since it appears users aren't using messaging to refer to email or anything else but SMS. I have proposed the other two as synonyms for sms (link). On the other hand, instant-message is proposed as a synonym for messaging, which I disagree with since again, users have only used messaging for SMS.

I wonder if we need these tags at all. People seem to be mostly using them to describe their devices, not to help categorize the question. That's the wrong use for them. Most of the time when I see tags like this or tags for devices, Android versions, or for a specific mod, the issue they're having has nothing to do with any of that. In fact, it makes ...

To provide what seems to be the majority answer at this point: We'd prefer to have specific tags, since the questions can be searched generically in other ways.

Well spotted, thanks! I've merged all but the encryption tags. "disk encryption" definitely is an encryption – but encryption is not necessarily disk encryption. There's also FBE (file based encryption), text encryption (e.g. using GPG), encryption in messengers (e.g. OMEMO in XMPP), etc.pp., so IMHO we should better keep the two separate.

recording should no longer be used; I've retagged the handful of questions that were using it with more specific variants to disambiguate it. It is not a synonym of anything at the moment since the more specific tags will appear in the tag autocomplete anyway.

1

Renamed the tag to data-transfer to handle anything other than file transfers. Still a broad-ish tag, but should hopefully not get confused with file-transfer (at least not as much) or other things.

We already had external-display so I merged monitor into it and created an external-monitor synonym. I think monitoring needs some work though, it's too vague — there are lots of unrelated things that you can monitor. If everything is referring to process monitoring, perhaps we should rename the tag to process-monitor?

1

Seems good to me; this is done.

I went ahead and renamed stock-ui to vanilla-ui. I've also updated the tag wiki and the handful of questions that were using the old tag to use the correct terminology. There did not appear to be any questions that were using stock-ui to actually refer to a "stock" (manufacturer default) interface, so the tag is unused at this point.

htc-g1 is a synonym for t-mobile-g1 and htc-dream
